The 6th edition of A Sunday in the Country will take place between 5th and 8th of August 2017 during 17th T-Mobile New Horizons IFF.
Co-organized by T-Mobile New Horizons IFF and the European Film Academy (EFA), A Sunday in the Country will gather young film critics and journalists for a workshop during the first weekend of the festival. The participants, recommended by their respective national culture institutions, will meet for 3 days in a remote country house near Wrocław (in Zagórze Śląskie on Bystrzyckie Lake) where they will watch and discuss films, meet special guests (filmmakers brought by New Horizons IFF) and talk about important film criticism issues. They will exchange their professional experiences in order to build an international professional network.
The event is supported by the Polish Film Institute, EUNIC, Austrian Cultural Forum, the Embassy of the Netherlands, Italian and Romanian Institutes of Culture, Polish Cultural Institute in Tel Aviv, blog.filmpolska.de, Kulturbrauerei e.V. and organized in collaboration with Krzysztof Mętrak Award for young critics - the Polish participants are winners of the annual competition for best film review.
I attended Sunday in the Country in 2016 and found it a highly rewarding experience. For four days, I lived with 11 other young European film critics and journalists in a beautiful lake house outside Wroclaw, spending day and night discussing cinema, film criticism and life. We also watched films from the New Horizons festival programme and had engaging discussions about them with their directors who joined us for lunch and dinner. (…)
It was fascinating to share ideas and compare and contrast approaches to film criticismwith my new friends from Poland, Germany, Israel, the Netherlands, Rumania, Spain, Austria, Hungary and Czech Republic whom I hope will remain in my network for many years to come. I got so many new perspectives on both film criticism and European identity.
