Makala Photon

Menashe Lustig is unhappy. His wife dies, and according to societal rules, a single man is not allowed to raise a child. As a result, his son is placed in the care of a wealthy but despotic uncle, which condemns Menashe to solitude and the need to search for a new companion-not to mention desperate attempts to prove to the world that he is able to take care of his child while remaining faithful to tradition. The tightly framed images and moving camera (almost like the canonical-nomen est omen-The Son by the Dardenne brothers) reveal the cinematographic experience and documentary background of young New Yorker Joshua Z. Weinstein, making his first feature film. The use of amateur actors, original locations, and the absence of music add a sense of authenticity and intensify the film's emotional power. Menashe was the first film shot in Brooklyn's Hasidic community since the war, and it is almost entirely in Yiddish. It was a winner of the US in Progress program (American Film Festival 2016).
