The Burglar

Hagar Ben-Asher

Scaffolding Through the Wall

Jael lives in Arad, near the Dead Sea, where she works at one of the elegant resort hotels. She also spends time at the local zoo, taking care of the leopard and some of the other wild animals. She shares her apartment with her mother, who simply does not come home one day-no contact, no phone calls. Jael tries to figure out why her mother left her, but, in the end, she gives up. On top of that, someone breaks into her apartment. In what she sees as "self-defense," she starts breaking into other people's apartments, stealing items that have particular value to their owners. What she is really looking for are attention and intimacy. Sometimes she watches the people she is about to attack. In the end, she meets a foreigner, a German geologist with whom she tries to form a relationship based on responsibility and trust. Ben-Asher's second feature film, which premiered at this year's Rotterdam International Film Festival, is a portrait of an abandoned girl who is trying to survive the loss of a loved one and, at the same time, not to stand out from the crowd. In her world, reality blends with fiction. Rules suddenly cease to apply. She will do anything just to feel important to someone, even if just for a moment.
