This is the first German-language film for the German-born Diane Kruger, the star of Quentin Tarantino's Inglourious Basterds and Wolfgang Petersen's Troy, and it garnered her first Golden Palm. Kruger's character loses everything: her husband (a Kurd) and young son. When the perpetrators of the bombing are captured, their racist motives come to the fore. The arrest of the young neo-Nazi's does little to alleviate Katja's pain and fails to quench her thirst for revenge - especially since the chances of a fair verdict are small. Akin's enthralling court-room drama meets psychological cinema, and the director does not shy from provocative questions about how Europe is dealing with its budding xenophobia and hate. Resonating with the anxious atmosphere of our time, this crime film not only puts the woman at its center, but also allows her - the victim - to become an avenger. Powerful cinema of these times.
