Requiem for Mrs. J Sister of Mine

In Kerala in South India, boisterous celebrations are still held in honor of Kali. According to legend, Kali issued forth from the forehead of the goddess of victory, Durga, when the latter was angered by the sight of evil in the world. Durga is also the name of a young woman who, under the cover of the night, decides to run away with her lover, Kabeer. In order to catch their train, they have to take a page out of Blanche DuBois' book and depend on "the kindness of strangers." With no time to lose, they decide to accept a ride in a passing car. In his third, almost completely improvised film, Sanal Kumar Sasidharan plays with the conventions of road movies: combining scenes of shocking rituals with the claustrophobic atmosphere of a moving vehicle on a sweltering night, he shows how evil is imperceptibly born. Having in mind brutal attacks that have shaken his country in recent times, the Indian director does not offer any hope.
